We Love Christian Dior!

Christian Dior, like other fashion powerhouses like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel, is relatively timeless (except perhaps for their Rasta line – blech!). Point-in-case, about a year ago I bought a vintage monogram Dior clutch in brown and tan; it’s been a staple ever since and is in pristine condition. When you invest and take pride in your fashion choices, a brand like Dior will pay off three-fold.

The French label has been dazzling us with their products since 1946, expanding from couture into everything from makeup and perfume to RTW and sunglasses. Having been a fan of their makeup line for years now, I can vehemently advocate for their foundations and mascara. Their Airflash spray foundation is one of the best I’ve ever tried. It’s essentially like air brushing your face every morning; it goes on exceptionally light and the coverage is phenomenal. Be forewarned, though; it’s pricey (naturally) and tends to run out quickly (despite what their salespeople tell you).  Along with that, their DiorShow mascara gives you lashes for days and is absolutely worth every penny of its $40 price tag. Paris Fashion Week Fall 2011 Highlights

Paris Fashion Week Fall 2011 Highlights

Looking at Paris Fashion Week Fall 2011, I was captivated by several of the collections and I fell in love with my favorite and beloved designers all over again. Karl Lagerfeld has never disappointed me and he amazed me again this season. Chanel had a very dark and dramatic feeling to it and also appeared to be menswear-inspired. I loved the combination of grunge mixed in with the polished tweeds, as well as the combination of the androgynous elements combined with shredded chiffons and distressed leggings. There was cropped and cuffed trousers, which I took notice to because I loved the combination of the slim pant-leg with a huge folded-over cuff.

Another collection that I always love every season is Dior. The color palette was filled with rich jewel tones such as emerald greens, sapphire blues, and dark amethysts. There were lots of layers and combinations of lavish textures like velvets, furs, cashmeres, and leathers. Long capes draped over the models and their faces were hidden with huge, floppy hats. Who Wears Haute Couture?

Who Wears Haute Couture?

While I was at work yesterday, our stylish receptionist, Jason, flagged me down to show me an article that had been published in the Wall Street Journal. The headline read, “Who Buys These Clothes? They do.” I was immediately intrigued because as we know, the people who purchase haute couture are very few and far between (only a couple hundred in the world). Who are these women and how in the heck do they afford a $50,000 Dolce & Gabbana dress?

Celebrities and fashion industry insiders get to wear haute couture at no cost (lucky bastards!); fashion designers look to them for easy promotion. All others are left with either no chance in hell or the price tag of a luxury vehicle. Many feel that it’s prosperous spending that much on something you can’t use every day let alone every week. Nonetheless, there are women out there who will gladly fork over the dough. They believe that, like a beautiful painting or statue, haute couture is art and worth the investment; they’re building a valuable collection. Read more

Sunglasses Trends for Spring 2011

Sunglasses Trends for Spring 2011

Sunglasses are one of those rare accessories in life that can potentially transcend planned obsolescence. Not in the sense that cycled trends don’t exist but that people typically can get away with wearing a pair of sunglasses they bought three years ago today. That’s one of the beautiful things about investing in designer eyewear; you may spend $300+ on a pair of timeless Gucci’s but you’ll be able to wear them for years because let’s face it, Gucci is always in style.

Unfortunately I can’t say the same about the 2011 sunglasses trends we’re seeing unfold at the myriad of fashion weeks. I’m just going to put it out there; this year’s eyewear trends are weird, impractical and unflattering. There, I said it but now it’s up to you to draw your own conclusions. After all, fashion is meant to inspire discussion and critique. Read more

Why I Love BCBG Max Azria

Why I Love BCBG Max Azria

Back in the day when I was paying a lot less on rent than I am now, I would frequently indulge myself with lavish garments and high quality accessories: LV purses, Burberry scarves, Tory Burch shoes and True Religion jeans. Back in those lovely days, I would often find myself within the cozy, well-lit confines of the BCBG store on Union Street, sifting through his gorgeous dresses and timeless lifestyle garments.

BCBG Max Azria may not quite compare to the likes of Louis Vuitton, Dior, Versace or Chanel but nobody can argue that the brand has exploded since its inception in 1989. With unwavering support from followers and celebrities all over the world, the brand is truly thriving. He’s one of the most successful designers and businessmen in the industry, with over 75 freestanding stores. Read more
