We Love Alexander McQueen!
The fashion world was rocked to its core when it discovered that Alexander McQueen had taken his own life. So young, so talented, so influential…such a waste! It was truly devastating. Thankfully, his brand lives on through the flawless work of Sarah Burton who was named the new creative director. Her work is now world renowned, especially after receiving the prestigious honor of designing royalty’s wedding dress.
Kate Middleton (now, Duchess of Cambridge) – who had designers lining up for miles to design her dress – chose Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, a clear nod to the prestige and timelessness of the design powerhouse. Burton also designed Pippa Middleton’s bridesmaid dress, a gown that had the head of every male suitor across the planet turn in unison; a dress that had fashion stylists wonder which sister looked best despite the obvious – it was Kate’s big day! Fashion at the Royal Wedding
I don’t think the revealing of a dress has ever been so anticipated as it was Friday, April 29th, 2011 at the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. I watched the countdown on my television, literally counting the seconds until I could finally see what Kate’s dress looked like. The details of her gown were kept top-secret and was not unveiled until she finally made her way to Westminster Abbey. Upon first glance of Kate and her gown, I could not take my eyes away from her and I’m sure all other eyes were locked on her as well. Read more
Paris Fashion Week Fall 2011 Highlights
Looking at Paris Fashion Week Fall 2011, I was captivated by several of the collections and I fell in love with my favorite and beloved designers all over again. Karl Lagerfeld has never disappointed me and he amazed me again this season. Chanel had a very dark and dramatic feeling to it and also appeared to be menswear-inspired. I loved the combination of grunge mixed in with the polished tweeds, as well as the combination of the androgynous elements combined with shredded chiffons and distressed leggings. There was cropped and cuffed trousers, which I took notice to because I loved the combination of the slim pant-leg with a huge folded-over cuff.
Another collection that I always love every season is Dior. The color palette was filled with rich jewel tones such as emerald greens, sapphire blues, and dark amethysts. There were lots of layers and combinations of lavish textures like velvets, furs, cashmeres, and leathers. Long capes draped over the models and their faces were hidden with huge, floppy hats. Isabella Blow is our Fashion Icon
When I announced to my current job that I would be going back to school for my MFA in Fashion Marketing and Merchandising, they were exceptionally gracious about it. Shortly after was holiday break and one of my bosses went out of his way to purchase a thoughtful gift for me, three fashion-related books: a gorgeous YSL coffee table book and two biographies on the legendary, Isabella Blow.
I immediately started in on one of them because admittedly, I didn’t know much about her. She had been credited for discovering the likes of Philip Treacy and Alexander McQueen but as I read on I realized that there was much more to this international style icon; she was a true talent and transformed how we view fashion today, pushing the boundaries more than most could ever dream or dare to.
